Quick note on refurbished condition: PERFECT! I was skeptical to get a refurbished unit but the one I got was in PERFECT condition, not a scratch.. There also seems to be no technical issues, still have outstanding battery life for one!
My thoughts on the Garmin Forerunner 235:
I am coming from being a huge Pebble fan until they sold off to fitbit… I would have kept my Pebble Time Steel for its great 5 day battery life and full swimproof build, but when I started cardio specific workouts, I needed something with a heart rate monitor… This started my agonizing search for an equivalent replacement for the Pebble…
I searched high and low.. I am the type of guy that likes to leave his watch on around the clock, for any activities including swimming… Now that Pebble is gone, the whole smartwatch industry is terribly lacking in these two categories, SWIMproof and LONG battery life.. Almost all of the smartwatches out there are iP rated for brief accidental submersion in water at most.. The very few exceptions are either beastly looking on your wrist or have a battery that quits after a day or two, or both scenarios..
Finally found something I can live with in the Garmin Forerunner 235! Sure, like any technology, there are a few things lacking: #1 –
Cannot respond to notifications like you could with Pebble. #2 – Occasional glitches.. It connects and disconnects from bluetooth on my phone at random times, usually 2+ times a day.. The weather widget won’t load at times, have to shut off and restart watch to fix. #3 – Sleep data is wack.. Sometimes close, sometimes way off, sometimes not recorded at all.. I doubt these issues are associated with this being refurbished.. I had two different brand new Samsung watches that quirked out worst than that… This is just more proof that no technology is perfect.
Despite the above noted cons I give this product 5 stars. Why? First of all, the battery is unbelievable! My first charge was on a Monday night, I did roughly 2.5 hours of GPS tracked jogs and I had around 15% or so battery life the next Monday night… Charged again that Monday and was less active that week… Did 30 min or so walk one day GPS tracked. Had a little over an hour of GPS tracked Cycling on Sun and this time on Monday night I still had 38% battery left! Incredible! I was content to charge it every Mon but I can see there will be times I can even go longer! (It should be noted I leave my backlight off.. This likely contributes… I have to push backlight button for it to come on… No problem though… Outdoor visibilty on the always on transflective display is perfect! Even indoors.. move your wrist so screen is facing light source and it is often still easy to see… Got used to this display with Pebble.) Secondly, I love not having to worry about taking this watch off for anything.. Can leave on in shower, pool, lake, wherever! These two aspects make this watch very pleasant to have, can deal with the cons.
Additional aspects I love:
– Always on display… I don’t know if its just me but it is irritating having a black screen on your wrist until you turn your wrist, when/if the watch recognizes that motion… By and large that is what you are stuck with in the industry right now… Unless of course you activate AOD on the smartwatch and have battery sucked even faster. NOT SO WITH THE GARMIN! It’s always on with zero battery compromise!
– 24 hr HR monitoring.. very easy to check your heartrate in an instant… With the Samsungs I had to go to heartrate screen, push a button to measure, and wait for a reading… There again, you can activate around the clock monitoring with the other watches but you will compromise battery! It’s amazing that I get realtime, 24×7 HR monitoring with the Garmin while still seeing incredible battery life!
– Look – in my opinion this is one of the better looking options in waterproof category.. And you can change bands! (Although it is not a quick change) I have attached a photo… I went with the white band right away I think it makes it look cool.
Totally recommend this watch and you can trust getting a good refurbished unit at good discount off new!

I love this watch! Unfortunately, my review is going to be based on only using it for a month, a month that was February in Iowa, ie I haven’t had a chance to take it outside yet to run with. I’ve been using it on my treadmill for heart rate and I use it all day to count my steps and continue to monitor my heart rate. I used a chest hr monitor prior to this and the numbers between the two seem to jive. I will say that until I get outside and calibrate it, it is absolutely worthless for distance and speed on the treadmill. That’s not really an issue unless you use the Garmin app to record that stuff. I really don’t care as my treadmill workout is just for breaking a sweat and to keep me enough in shape for running outside when the weather permits (if it ever permits this year!). The watch arrived to me in flawless condition. It pretty much looked brand new to me. I did buy a silicone sleeve and face protection for it and I recommend everyone considering any workout watch to do that as there’s always opportunities to bang these things around. I’m surprised by how comfortable this watch is on my wrist. Normally, I like to not wear a watch tight against my wrist, so initially I was a little concerned knowing that I’d have to do that for accurate hr measurements but it’s really not that bad. And sleeping with it on (to measure sleep quality) isn’t bad either. As I said, I have yet to turn the gps on so battery life is great right now. I go 4 or 5 days before I put it on the charger, and even then it’s still showing around 50% juice. I’m sure it won’t be so great when I’m outside and have the gps going but I’m optimistic that it’ll still be pretty good. Overall, I’m very pleased with this watch. This one is a refurbished unit and I believe I got pretty lucky in that it seems like a brand new unit. I can’t wait for warmer weather so I can get outside with it and put it through its paces. I would definitely recommend this, heck, I’d recommend the brand new one if you can afford the extra amount, this watch is definitely worth it in my opinion
Edit 1: It’s now a couple of months into the summer and I’m sticking with the 5 stars for this watch. I couldn’t be happier with this watch. It finds satellites quickly , it has easy to read displays available and the battery life is still better than I expected. It’s still not totally accurate on my treadmill but it’s closer now that I’ve used it outdoors (definitely not a deal breaker for me). I still highly recommend this watch, new or refurbished.
